The Apostle Paul had no money or computer to help him get the Good News to others. But He had the Good News in his heart. He knew that Jesus had told His followers to get this news to EVERYONE. What made Paul different from most men was the strong faith he had that God was with Him no matter what happened to him. So instead of writing about all the problems that he had in prison, he wrote about his joy. He explained his attitude: I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances (Phil. 4:11 NIV).
For many years my thoughts centered on the things that I did not have. When my prayers were not answered I was often unhappy. My unhappiness made me doubt that God was working in me. I could not understand what Paul meant when he said: God who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe Him (Rom. 15:13 TLB). But finally, I came to understand that I should believe that He was giving me happiness and peace! Gradually I realized that what I believed was actually happening to me!
Our unhappy thoughts can have a great influence on how we feel and live. But when our attention centers on the victories we believe God has given us, then those victories can become real to us even before we actually experience them!
If our thoughts focus on what we want, but don’t have, those thoughts often lead us into unhappiness. However, Paul wrote: Rejoice in the Lord (Phil. 4:4). When? Always. Why? Because this allows God’s best plan to become ours even before we see it happen.
When Paul was in prison he could easily have concentrated on the fear and uncertainty that many prisoners endure. Instead, he determined to write about the victories he believed were his, and what he believed God wants for everyone who believes in Jesus as Savior.
When we focus our thoughts on what Jesus has done for us, His victories become ours! Prison bars, problems and sickness may not immediately disappear, but Jesus came to help us become whatever God wants.
Paul’s faith in God has caused him to help millions of hurting people during the past 2,000 years. You and I can be God’s instruments to help people too, but first we must want His will more than we want our own.
Jesus said, Come unto me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28). Jesus promised to help us if we believe He is helping us. We have His help to accomplish whatever God designed us to be. We can do what we are designed to do, by following His directions.
We can set our thoughts on becoming whatever God wants us to be. Easy? Often not. But His rewards are enormous. In fact they are exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us (Eph. 3:20). God worked mightily through Paul because Paul believed – even while chained in prison – that God was doing what was best to help Paul fulfill his mission. Paul did not squander his opportunity by thinking about his problems. He thought about people like you and me. He thought about what God wanted him to do to help us!
There are people who will never hear God’s Good News unless you and I allow Him to use us. I know from personal experience that He can use anyone of us in ways that are exceeding abundantly beyond what we imagine. Let’s not waste our opportunities by worrying about our past, present or future. Let’s spend our time and energies in praising Him and letting His Good News flow through us to others. Two thousand years ago, something very profound happened. God purchased our salvation with the blood of Jesus. As Jesus hung on the cross in agony, He looked down through time and saw you and me. He saw our desperate need for forgiveness and salvation. And for us He was willing to suffer.
God tells us in Hebrews 12:2 that Jesus, for the joy set before Him endured the cross. Just before He died Jesus said, It is finished, meaning He had bought with His blood our redemption. Period. Nothing else was necessary.
Our debt was paid in full. How foolish for us to ever think we could possibly do anything to earn, even in the smallest part, our salvation. Indeed, we would be insulting our most Holy God. It was God’s plan to redeem us with the life and death of Jesus. I wouldn’t have chosen to do it this way. Maybe you wouldn’t have either. But this was what God chose. And this way none of us will ever be able to feel proud. All glory will go to Jesus. Forever.
How precious the gift of salvation is. It was costly to Jesus to provide it for us. None of us could ever deserve it. Maybe that’s why some have a hard time accepting it. Sometimes we want to “earn” God’s gifts to us. But they are free – to all.
When I realized that all my past sins were forgiven, I was filled with gratitude. But I didn’t understand how complete Christ’s forgiveness is. My limited understanding caused me to believe that now I was responsible for any future sins. Now I was supposed to “know better” than to ever sin again. What a burden that was for me to carry! What if I had more bad marks against me then good marks? Would I still get to go to Heaven? How foolish I was! However, are there any of you who have felt at some time the same way? If so, please understand that we are each born with a sin nature. No matter how sweet and adorable each baby is, every one of us is a sinner in need of a Savior. This is why Jesus came. Only He would live the perfect, sinless life necessary to become the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
All glory to Jesus! He deserves our praise and worship. So let’s do it. Let’s praise and worship our Savior. Jesus, we exalt and praise you. Thank you, thank for providing our salvation! We love you!

Power in Praise has made a real difference in my life. I used to complain a lot. Now, I thank God more and see Him at work. May our Lord continue to bless and strengthen you and use you to bless many, including me! Gwen, MN
Many years ago when I was sick and heart-broken someone gave me Power in Praise. My spiritual life changed dramatically and I was instantly healed. Many times Jesus has me pick up one of Merlin’s books and I am always encouraged and strengthened.. Vanita, FL
Your book Power in Praise had been given out to many of the women in our Bible study group. Our leader has encouraged us as Merlin has, to praise through the good and bad times. How thankful we are for you. Kathy, AL
I have many testimonials about how your book, Power in Praise changed my life! After I read this book I started praising God for my wife’s smoking habit, and our son’s drug addiction, and the lack of passion in our marriage. Praise the Lord He answered
all my prayers. My wife and I had a loving relationship
for 35 years until she passed away. Praise God for His Word and Power in Praise.. George, MO
I recently went through an educational court experience
and pretty early on Power in Praise magically appeared in the back seat of my car. After looking at it for a week, I picked it up and began to read it. I cannot help but remark at how Merlin could automatically say, “Praise the Lord” in the event of all apparent mishaps and adversities. What a lesson to me, who
just one short year ago was just doing my best to find something good in my court experience and could not imagine praising God for it! Merlin is such an inspiration to me. I want to thank you for continuing his work and providing his books to those who are seeking the Kingdom of God. Anne, ID
Power in Praise saved our sanity when my wife and I
lost our boy. Thanks for Merlin’s book. Robert, CA
This book changed my worship and devotional life. Power in Praise is very clear - focus on God, praising and worshipping Him no matter what. God is working something wonderful out for your benefit. Sue, TX
I gave this book to my son when he was going through a divorce, hoping it would be a help to him and encourage him to “experiment with praise”. He did and it has been a help!
This is one of the best Christian books ever. There is power in praise if you use it consistently. It is a ticket out of depression. Reading and applying the ideas in this book will help you for sure.
Take your mind off of your problems and just Praise God. Merlin draws a link (like I have never heard anyone do) between praising God and trusting God. If you really trust God, then you can praise Him for all that is going wrong in your life, because your heartbreaks and struggles are temporary, His love endures forever.
Power in Praise is one of the best books I have read about trusting God.
