When Will Help Come?

by Merlin Carothers

Imagine yourself surrounded by an enemy that is pounding your position with artillery shells, intent on killing you and your comrades. In the distance you can hear tanks advancing toward you. An Infantry soldier, with only a rifle to defend himself, dreads an enemy tank.

Your ammunition is nearly gone; you are freezing cold. Many of your comrades are wounded; there is no doctor. You have been told that help is coming but no one knows when.

Night amplifies the numbing cold, your feet are wet, several of your friends have been told they have frostbite. What if they lose their toes, or worse? You fear that help will never come. Why doesn’t someone do something?

You hear the sound of airplanes. Are they friendly or the enemy?

Bombs begin to fall and you see that they are landing on enemy positions!

Then there is silence. In the distance you hear the sound of tanks – closer now. Are they friends or enemy? When their guns begin to blast, you see that their shells are pounding your enemy

Can you imagine how you would feel? You would experience tremendous relief. Your fear is gone! You no longer even feel the cold. You have been rescued!

Christians have been under attack for 2,000 years. Many of our friends are spiritually wounded. Disease and death can seem to be everywhere. We are tempted to feel hopeless. When will help come?

Christians have been waiting and hoping ever since Jesus left. We may ask, “Why is He taking so long to return?”

In God’s plan, 2,000 years are but the blink of an eye. Eternity will reach out for trillions of years – forever. We think in terms of today’s problems, but God is preparing us for eternity with Him.

To help us now, Jesus said, Surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Mt. 28:20).

Jesus told us in Luke 21 some of the things that would happen prior to His return. He foretold awesome events. There will be earthquakes, famines, epidemics, terrifying things happening, and great signs from heaven (vs. 11). People will undoubtedly be afraid, but when those who belong to Christ realize what is happening, we will shout with joy. All our suffering will end – forever. Our joy will be greater than we can imagine.

So when these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up!  For your salvation is near (vs. 28).

Then we will understand why God didn’t end this world before you and I were born. He wanted you and me to be added to His family!

He wanted you and me to be with Him forever.   (Reprint from August, 2007)

Don't You Care?

Have you ever noticed how often we feel confident of our own ability in areas where we have a lot of experience? Only too often to fall flat on our faces? The scripture that comes to mind is, Pride goes before destruction (see Prov. 16:18). Sometimes this can be downright humiliating. I thought about that when reading Matthew 8 and Mark 4.

Some of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen. They were confident of their ability. So, when Jesus said, Let’s go over to the other side, they piled into the boat with no concern. Besides, the weather looked fine. I’m assuming that since nothing is said to the contrary.

But then the Bible tells us that, Without warning a furious storm came up. That sounds just like Satan. He likes to try to catch us off guard. The disciples who were fishermen were probably not too concerned at first. However, they soon became alarmed and finally cried out to Jesus, Teacher, don’t you care if we drown? At that point they were not thinking about impressing the other men with their skill. Yes, they could probably sail all over the sea of Galilee with their eyes half closed. And they might have laughed at the concerns of the other men. At first. But now they realized they were unable to manage on their own. They were in real trouble.

This was when they turned to Jesus who was unconcerned – or so it seemed – sleeping in the back of the boat. They cried out to Him, “Don’t you care if we drown?” They really were in danger of their boat being swamped by waves.

Of course, Jesus cared. He loved these men. They had left everything to follow Him. And of course, Jesus loves us, even more than we can understand. He always stands ready to help us – always. He just doesn’t always help us the way we want. We don’t have to wait until things become desperate to seek Him and His help.

It was because the disciples were confident of their own ability that they waited until the last moment to cry out for Jesus’ help. Let’s not do that. Let’s ask for His wisdom and insight before we “get into the boat”. Let’s get into the habit of seeking Jesus, and then His help before we start anything.

I’m locked up in the Anderson County Detention Center and I had no hope, joy or peace in sight.  I read Prison to Praise and Bringing Heaven into Hell. I began thanking God for the good and the bad things that have happened to me, and something reached down into my heart, and I am feeling joy for the first time in a very long time. Keep me in your prayers.   Teddy, SC

As the Chaplain here at the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center I have distributed your books in several prisons across the Nation. These books enable the inmates to study and grow in their faith while incarcerated. God bless your faithfulness.

A Powerful Remedy

If someone makes you angry, bitter or resentful, there is a powerful remedy! Many of us have tried it and know that it works. Think of some wonderful blessing that God could give the person who angered you, and then steadfastly pray that He will do so. Why?

First, you will please God, who said, Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you (Luke 6:28) and second, you will cause healing in yourself.

At first this remedy may seem impossible to practice, but with persistence you will soon feel a miracle taking place in you. Whenever the enemy tries to send unhappy thoughts your way, this remedy will become increasingly easy for you to practice. You will soon enjoy praying this way, knowing that you are pleasing God, defeating the enemy, and receiving the blessing of a joyful heart!
