If we believe that God has heard our prayers, how long will it be until we see the answers? Jesus demonstrated that faith can produce instant results. But there is another kind of faith that pleases God. If we do not see or feel immediate answers to our prayers, it’s easy to cast away our faith – to believe God is not hearing or answering us.
God used Abraham as an example of great faith! He and others were praised in Hebrews 11:13: All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
Abraham’s faith did not bring him rapid results. He believed, and God had nothing but praise for his faith. But Abraham’s faith brought only one immediate result – God was pleased. Pleased, but He did nothing until many years later.
Don’t we often assume if God doesn’t answer our prayers right away that we are doing something wrong? Why do we react this way? Perhaps it’s because we like results. We like to see and feel proof.
But God has His priorities. If we believe Him, see no results, see no evidence – yet hold firm in our confidence – He is pleased. Abraham may be the example God wants us to follow, even when our natural minds rebel.
We may prefer to look at the pattern of Jesus’ life. When He believed God, there were always instant miracles. But there was one very crucial, all-important factor in everything Jesus did. He did nothing until the time of God’s perfect will.
Does God want you and me to always have instant answers to our prayers? Some folks would say, “Yes”. My own answer would be, “No”.
Jesus told us that by faith we could instantly remove mountains, heal the sick and do all kinds of good things. But He also warned us that some men would use faith to do mighty works, and yet never enter heaven (see Matthew 7:22). Faith that moves mountains may not always be what is best for us!
God knows when my prayers should be instantly granted, and when I should experience the blessing of learning to trust Him for days or years. I may never have the patience that Abraham had, but I rejoice in every opportunity to have the kind of faith that might cause God to say, Merlin trusts Me.
If you have countless prayers that aren’t answered, they may be opportunities to grow in patience and in the kind of faith that Abraham had (Reprint from May, 2001)

In Matthew 6 Jesus is teaching His disciples what we call the Lord’s Prayer: Thy kingdom come, thy will be done. When I have read those words I have often thought, “Lord I really want Your will done on this earth. How wonderful that would be. But I have no power to change anything”. Why would Jesus teach us to pray this if none of us could do anything to bring His will to pass?
Well, I can change myself and my attitude. I guess this is my little “kingdom” where I can be in control. I have very little influence in the rest of the world. But here in my own life I can decide to honor the Lord. It’s my decision to say something kind or unkind. I can choose to change my attitude to the kind of attitude I think God wants me to have. For example, do I happen to like the President of my country? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It really doesn’t matter, because of what God tells me to do in 1 Timothy 2. He commands each of us to pray for all those in positions of authority. Since I’m a Christian I especially pray for the godly politicians. And yes there are some. They often are not in the news so I may not know who they are but the Lord knows. I pray that God will give them godly wisdom and influence. Wherever they serve, locally, state or nationally, I ask God’s favor for them.
I also pray for our police and military that God will protect them from harm. I pray for all those who are trying to keep our country safe. I ask God to put a shield of His protection around them, especially those who are in dangerous circumstances. He knows who and where they are. I don’t need to know, I only need to pray for them.
Are you beginning to see that each one of us really do have spiritual responsibility? We can learn to control not only our own individual “kingdoms”, we can also have influence with our leaders through our prayers.
Personally I pray regularly that God will give our president wise counsel. I ask God to surround him with godly advisors. There is no way that I can personally know all of the information about any issue, so I ask the Lord to give the president’s advisors His wisdom.
It really doesn’t matter whether or not I like our president. Or whether I personally agree with him. God has told me in the Bible what my responsibility is. So for many years I have been praying for our presidents, regardless of my opinion about their policies. Sometimes this can be really difficult. But God will always honor our efforts to be obedient to what He tells us in 1 Timothy 2. Let’s turn over a new leaf, so to speak, and begin praying for all those in authority over us.

I didn’t believe in God. I was angry for being in jail and mad at my lawyer. My cellmate told me to have faith in God and told me about a book he read called Prison to Praise. The next day I saw it on the book cart, and I was bored so I picked it up and took it to my cell. Honestly, this book made me cry. After reading it I felt different in my spirit, and my life has been changed ever since. I found Jesus Christ and I feel like I died and was born again, a totally different person. I pray and thank God every day for my life just the way it is.. Rodolfo, County Jail, CA
